While CD Projekt Red’s action-RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was easily considered to be one of the top 10 best video games of 2015 thanks to its engrossing story, gorgeous open world environments, and engaging gameplay, some fans may assert that the title was missing an essential element by not allowing Geralt of Rivia to wield a shield for protection. Thankfully, the modder known as ScoutBr0 has stepped up to fill this gap by creating a brand new mod that adds a plethora of shields for Geralt to use.

As seen in the video below for The Witcher 3‘s Shields mod, ScoutBr0 has added over 40 shields with a multitude of different designs from all factions that can be used in battle, with the variety ranging from from a basic wooden plank to an intricately crafted metal shield. Just like one would expect, the shields can be used in combat for blocking incoming attacks, arrows, and to give an extra resistance to heavy-hitting blows from the enemy.
Interestingly enough, ScoutBr0’s mod for The Witcher 3 not only adds shields into the game, but also some new duds for Geralt of Rivia to sport. For instance, the modder has incorporated 8 new armor pieces, 12 different hoods, and 2 cloaks and capes, each with its own distinctive flair.
Of course, when it comes to the addition of shields with ScoutBr0’s Witcher 3 mod, some would argue that Geralt has no need for them due to his combat style not requiring the use of one. Not to mention, with the White Wolf able to conjure up a litany of spells that protect him, he could just as easily do without a shield.
Nevertheless, it’s safe to say that there are a lot of fans of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt out there who will benefit from ScoutBr0’s Shields mod, as it adds yet another layer of depth to an already substantially deep game. Bearing this in mind, although there are no sequels in the pipeline at the moment, should CD Projekt Red eventually make another followup and respect game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz’s wishes for more games in the series, perhaps the option to wield a shield will be available in future installments.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
